Like the traditional Summative tool, Holistic Summatives allow administrators to see auto-calculated averages on framework domains. However, Holistic Summatives go one step further by providing evaluators the flexibility to assess staff more holistically in the final scoring of each component.
This type of summative is designed to help organizations focused on the growth of their staff to give holistic appraisals, using an aggregate of data collected throughout the school year.
Learn more about how Holistic Summatives can support leaders by assessing a staff member's whole performance throughout the year:
Holistic ratings
The holistic ratings feature allows administrators to rate staff members’ on their overall performance level for each component during the end-of-year summative and the ‘average score’ presented to you on each framework component is calculated based on your organization’s requirements: only the practice measurements applied in specified forms will contribute to the average score calculation.
Selecting a rating
You can use the average score as a baseline to help you gauge the most suitable rating for your staff member. A newly created summative will show, by default, the closest rating to the average calculation. If there are ‘no ratings’ applied in formative activities so far this year, the rating menu will be blank for you to select your rating.
To select a different rating, under the 'Score' column, click the caron symbol of the rating you’d like to adjust and a drop-down menu will appear with a list of rating options to choose from.
Note: If you select a different score, the summative calculations—and the Final Score—will update as soon as you ‘Save’ the summative itself.
Viewing Component Insights
To help you select a rating for your evaluee that considers their performance holistically, you can view the component Insights. Access this feature by clicking the ‘back-in-time’ icon located under the Actions column for each component.
This will display the evidence, practice measurements, and comments associated with this component over the current school year from all form activities.
Any rows highlighted in yellow are the practice continuum selections that contribute to the average score calculation, while the others shown in white are supplementary evidence to help you make a holistic assessment.
Note: To narrow the focus of ratings provided, you can select the ‘Only Summative Ratings’ button and the insights provided will then be limited to any score-contributing forms. Toggle back to a full view by clicking on the ‘All Insights’ button.
Adding a comment
Where needed, you may like to provide a rationale for your rating selections or provide additional feedback for your staff to view on their shared summative. To do this, you can simply click the ‘Add comment’ icon and type your comment in the box.
Note: Any newly added comments will turn the comment box yellow to indicate that changes have not been saved. To save this to the summative, click the green ‘Save Profile’ button up top on the page.
The 'Open Comment Bank' option enables you to view the comment bank of your framework for model text to use in your comments and—if configured for your district—any look-fors associated.
